I don't think your fondness of starting the majority of your posts with the little warning exclamation mark helps with this perception. Now, I'm sure you mean no harm Pooch, it's just that many of your posts that I read come across as being a little preachy. I just didn't like it, and that's my own valid opinion. Well, I'm sure for you and many others it is a really great show. I got the impression from your post that you are saying my opinion of Oz is wrong, and that it is actually a really enthralling show. A 100m race where I cared little about the winners and losers would hold no interest for me (especially if it was on for an hour every week for a couple of months).
I actually find athletics (outside of the Olympics and Paralympics) really rather dull. cheering for my countrymen/women or an athlete like Bolt that is charismatic and hugely talented. However, I do have some emotional investment to make in these races e.g. I do not think that the 100m sprints I have watched are boring. Let me take up your example of the 100m sprint. But then films, unlike a five season TV show, only last a for a few hours at most. I don't mind watching films where I don't particularly connect with the characters if the themes/story/visuals/audio etc. Now I appreciate that examining prison life can be very interesting (Shawshank Redemption, A Prophet, Papillon, Cool Hand Luke etc.), but after several hours, Oz just got dull. I realised that watching it was more of a chore than something I was doing for entertainment, so I cut my losses and sold the box set without watching the rest of it (I had also been told that the latter seasons weren't as good as the first few, which helped convince me to ditch it). I was never excited about getting home from work to watch more of it (unlike I was with The Sopranos and The Wire). Often, I did feel that the show was a little repetitive (could be the due to the restricted location as you pointed out). I frankly couldn't care what happened to them (whether that be a shanking or prison yard buggery). I felt no emotional connection to any of them. I did not like any of the characters in the episodes I watched (Seasons 1-3).
If you read my comment again, you will see why I (personally) was rather bored by Oz.
